Michael Swords Studio is a conservation-led architecture practice and heritage consultancy based in London. We provide expert advice on listed buildings, conservation areas, and historically significant sites across the UK.
Led by AABC-accredited architect Michael Swords, the studio brings specialist experience in fabric repair, adaptive reuse and heritage consultancy. Michael is on the approved list of Inspecting Architects for the dioceses of Carlisle, London, Southwark, Chelmsford, Chichester, Rochester, St. Albans and Guildford, and currently acts as Inspecting Architect to several listed churches.
Alongside architectural and conservation services, the practice provides strategic advice on planning and listed building consent, particularly on sites with complex or previously unsuccessful planning histories.

Our work brings together deep heritage expertise with contemporary architectural design. We deliver thoughtful, context-driven projects across a range of building types.
The practice is led by Michael Swords, an AABC-accredited conservation architect with extensive experience working on listed and historic buildings.
Michael Swords Studio is a conservation-led architecture and heritage consultancy based in both London & the Lake District. We provide expert advice on listed buildings, conservation areas, and historically significant sites across the UK.
We enjoy working with church communities to meet their responsibilities as stewards of historic buildings, from quinquennial inspections and urgent repairs to reordering and long-term conservation planning.
Michael Swords Studio sits within the wider Swords Lopez Group of companies, owned by Michael Swords & Samantha Lopez, and which brings together architectural practice, heritage consultancy, property development, interior design and the long-term care of historic buildings.
The studio provides architectural, conservation and heritage consultancy services for external clients.
Swords Heritage Properties is the group’s separate development company, shaped by the principle of the architect as developer. It is intended for projects where the group acts directly as developer, owner or custodian, bringing conservation-led judgement to the repair, adaptation and stewardship of buildings of character and significance.
Both companies share the same underlying commitment: understanding historic fabric, acting with care and supporting sustainable new uses for historic buildings.
